NaBloPoMo Day 4: Nerdy home decor

If I haven't made it clear on this blog yet, I am a nerd.  My particular brand of nerd is related to sci-fi, fantasy, literature, video games, and some comic book/graphic novels.  Some nerdy home decor items I already own are a TARDIS cookie jar and mug, a Starship Enterprise pizza cutter, a Doctor Who clock (in Cub's room), a Shaun of the Dead art print that was a gift, an Tenth Doctor Sonic Screwdriver, plus Cub has a Star Wars print and some art pieces featuring Batman and Spider-man.  If I had my way, I would have a home full of items based off of things that I love, but unfortunately these things cost money.  Ain't that always the way?  So for now, I can dream about some of the things from my pinterest that I would purchase if money were no object:

For my chess playing husband :)

I could definitely see this hanging on my wall!
Love.
SO cool.

The Iron Man Iron.

I kind of need this for my bathroom.  Too bad as of now it's sold out :(

Tetris.  Cushions.

Um...how cool is this cutting board?

The wand is a freaking REMOTE.

Nooks & Crannies

We've been living in the same apartment for over 7 years.  It was the first place we moved into when we got married, and we haven't been able to afford to leave it.  Ever since Jacob began walking, we started feeling the walls closing in on us.  This 950 square feet, 2 bedrooms with minimal storage space is feeling tighter and tighter each day, especially with growing boys who acquire more and more stuff.  We aren't able to move again this year, and I've been really bummed that we are stuck here.  I've been dreaming of painting, hard wood floors, getting new furniture, a dining room...but since we are still here, I am trying to focus on the positives.

There are lots of perks to living where we live, some of them being free access to our pool, fitness center, and being able to rent out the community room for parties (which we did for Jacob's first two birthdays).  Management is insanely nice, and very workable.  We are set away from the main road, with a nice big pond right out our window.  The neighborhood is basically a big loop, which can be boring to run around but it makes for a nice (and pretty safe) workout.  We also have a washer/dryer, dishwasher, two bathrooms, and the apartment is only 7 years old (we were the first tenants here).  This is also the place where Bennett was born, and the only home both boys have known so far.  I know that when we leave I will be incredibly sad, though excited to move on to bigger and better places.

I am not a decorator at all, though the way I pin home decor and DIY tutorials you would think I was buying new houses every month.  We are limited in what we can do around here but I try to make it as homey as possible.  Here are some of my favorite little spots around our home:

One of two instagram canvases I made
Tim has had this fire truck since he was a kid.  It has guarded our water heater closet from prying cats
since we've lived here :)
A fun place to put little quotes from Jacob and a terrarium made by my friend Ann
Speaking of Ann, I just picked up this from her today :)
You should check out her shop, it's full of amazing stuff!
My MIL brought this for the boys and it's currently behind the rocking chair in the bedroom.
I just had to buy this suitcase from etsy since I had the same one as a kid!

More baby stuff :)  That music box was mine as a child.

Bennett's nook

Cub's kitchen

And my favorite spot of all...anywhere these two are :)

NaBloPoMo Day 22: All that glitters...

Today was our yearly tradition of staying away from the busy shopping madness and setting up our Christmas tree and decorations instead.  I put Nat King Cole on the Pandora and we turned our little apartment into a glittery winter wonderland.  Most of the decorations were bought on sale or handmade.

Tiny deer from Hobby Lobby, fake snow, mason jar

The tree was full price ($5) at Target, I made the snow globe
and the candle is from a craft show

From the same craft show

Vintage glass bought at a local store, little house was a gift (from a craft show!)

Our tree was bought at Target on sale years ago.  It's not the biggest, fluffiest tree, but it's easy to set up and it's ours :)  Most of our ornaments are from our childhoods, some were bought on clearance, some were gifts.

My helper was sleeping :)

Good thing we have another!

One extra stocking starting this year!

How do you like to decorate for the holidays?  Any traditions?
